Laparoscopic Surgery

  • Lapaorscopic Surgery was first introduced in the Royal Medical Services and Jordan by performing a Lapaorscopic  cholecystectomy in the King Hussein Medical City in 1991.
  • Later this technology was introduced to all hospitals of the Royal Medical Services and laparoscopic surgery became the standard of care surgery for cholecystectomy in all hospitals of the Royal Medical Services.
  • There has been several attempts by some of the premier surgeons to perform other laparoscopic operations including splenectomy and hernial repair. Nevertheless, it remained an individual attempts and did not take root.
  • Doctors were trained in Strasbourg ‘s IRCAD (Institute de Recherche contre les Cancers de l’Appareil Digestif) Laparoscopic Training Center, which is recognized worldwide as today’s reference training center in minimally invasive surgery and has earned an official distinction as a comprehensive – American College of Surgeons Accredited Education Institute (AEI)upon which laparoscopic surgery has been formally introduced in Royal Medical Services via numerous surgeries to the point that laparoscopic surgery has become the standard of care for many surgeries.

Achievements

  • Laparoscopic   Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery in the Royal Medical Services is now routinely performed in numerous scheduled operations as well as many emergency cases and is now considered in various cases to be the standard of care.
  • For instance, cholecystectomy, various types of hernias, splenectomy, adrenalectomy and  tumors of stomach, small and large bowel, exploratory laparoscopy and undergoing biopsy that aids in the diagnosis of liver or lymph nodes diseases or various tumors of the abdomen,  in addition to the surgical treatment of morbid obesity which can all be performed laparoscopically. Moreover,   diaphragmatic hernia repair operations and reflux surgeries has also become the standard of esophageal surgeries with excellent results.
  • Laparoscopic Surgery therefore is also being utilized in emergency cases which aids in the diagnosis and/ or management. This can be utilized in the diagnosis of abdominal surgical cases, appendectomies, perforated duodenal ulcer repairs, evaluation of splenic and  liver injuries and laparoscopic management of bleeding which can include repair or surgical removal of spleen or other emergency cases.
  • Collaboration is in place with our colleagues in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department to manage diseases occurring throughout the female reproductive system and performing laparoscopic surgeries for selected gynecological cases such as complicated ovarian cysts, pregnancy occurring in the fallopian tubes (ectopic pregnancy), as well as other cases in the department .
  • Laparoscopic surgery or what is known today as Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) has become the standard of care for more than 70% of scheduled surgeries.

Upper Gastrointestinal Tract and Bariatric Surgery

  • Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve (an operation to decrease the size of the stomach) and Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass surgery was first performed in Jordan at King Hussein Medical City in 2006.

Gastric Banding for the treatment of morbid obesity was performed and the Royal Medical Services purchased the necessary equipments and instruments for insured patients and their families, and this operation and other bariatric surgeries such as Gastric Sleeve or Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass) has became the standard of care in the King Hussein Medical City.
