Colorectal Surgery
- Colorectal Surgery Unit was first established in December of 2008. It started as a team of a single consultant and two specialists. Throughout the past era, several major advances occurred in the unit most notably a major increase in the number of staff.
- A specialized stoma clinic and chronic wound care clinic was established and was followed by opening of a specialized clinic for colorectal surgery. The unit witnessed an increase in the number of allocated theater days to three per week of which, one was allocated to general surgery and two for colorectal surgery.
- Two doctors have received their fellowship training for two years abroad, one of them is now fully boarded and the other is now Jordanian board-legible. Specialized nurses were also assigned to the unit.
- Introduction of minimally invasive surgery have revolutionized the quality of treatment offered for colorectal surgery like laparoscopic colonic and rectal resection , transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization (THD), video assisted fistula treatment (VAFT), trans-anal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM), sphincter muscle repair beside many other new procedures.
Major operations performed at the Unit
Laparoscopic surgery is used to perform:
- Total colectomy.
- Sigmoid operations.
- Treatment of anal fistulas.

Specialized Colorectal clinic, Stoma clinic, Chronic wounds clinic, Nutritionist Consultations, Specialiality nurse consultations, adherence to the latest international clinical guidelines .
Aspirations of the Unit :
- Introduction of novel operations to the Royal Medical Services and Jordan.
- Establishment of a comprehensive laboratory to test the functions of the colon, rectum and anus.
- Conducting most colectomies, and proctectomies laparosopically.

- Annual Colorectal Surgery Scientific Day.
- Weekly Multi-disciplinary Team meetings discuss tumor cases.
- Thursday Unit’s meeting held on a weekly basis to discuss weekly accomplishments.

- Do we conduct laparoscopic colectomy operations? - Yes, but for specific cases.
- Is Laser treatment for hemorrhoids available in the unit? - No, for it has been proven ineffective add to it, the introduction of an alternative treatment by ultrasound waves which is painless and leaves no scars.
- Are hemorrhoids (Bawaseer) and anal fistulas (Nawaseer) “which both have similar pronunciation in Arabic” different? - Of course, there is a big difference.
