Injuries from accidents refer to severe life-threatening physical injuries, causing damage to the body inflicted by external forces. Accidental injuries are often predictable and preventable, covering a range of scenarios such as vehicle collisions, pedestrian accidents, falls from heights, as well as incidents involving blunt force trauma, burns, stabbings, and assault injuries.
Establishment of the Program
Following the approach of His Majesty King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein(May God protect and protect him ) in keeping up with progress and development in scientific and medical fields, and in line with the directives of the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces to cooperate with the U.S. Central Command, a specialized system was established to deal with accident injuries in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The Hussein Medical City was designated as the nucleus of this system, obtaining accreditation from the American College of Surgeons as a trauma center accidents first level, adhering to international medical standards.
Based on this, two training workshops were conducted with the American side to exchange experiences on creating an integrated system for managing and dealing with accident injuries, leading to the accreditation of the Hussein Medical City as the first specialized referral center for accident injuries in the region.
Vision: Excellence in providing comprehensive medical care that meets national and international accreditation standards as a first-level regional trauma center in trauma care and acute trauma surgery, keeping pace with global medical advancements.
Mission: Reduce deaths, save lives and salvage injured limbs resulting from injuries or disasters, enhance trauma care by adhering to innovative practices, guidelines and hospital policies based on evidence-based medicine, improve coordinated emergency medical response to accidents, and enhance communication between trauma health care providers .
• Establishment of the trauma unit in September 2019
• Led by the head of the program, a health physician (Trauma medical director) and managed by the program director, a registered nurse (Trauma program manager), consisting of a qualified team of doctors and nurses, along with subsidiary committees. Its main tasks include
1- monitoring medical care from the moment of the accident, providing initial first aid until after the patient is discharged for follow-up or treatment to receive rehabilitation, both physical and functional
2- Developing and monitoring special protocols for receiving and dealing with various injuries , then circulating them and supervising their application in the correct manner, and accordingly following up on progress in the medical care provided to patients.
3- Cooperating with civil defense and field medicine to train them on handling and transporting casualties in safe ways according to international standards, and establishing chain communication methods to pass information about the injured before they arrive at Al Hussein Medical City.
4- Managing a special operating room for critical injuries requiring immediate surgical intervention in the emergency department of the Hussein Medical City.
5- Developing forms to facilitate the documentation process for data related to accident injuries, from the moment of injury occurrence to the patient's arrival at the emergency department and hospital admission.
6- Monitoring injuries admitted either through emergency departments or cases directly transferred to intensive care units and various departments within the Hussein Medical City.
7- Regulation and coordination of transfers between peripheral hospitals and the Hussein Medical City.
8- Follow up on the registration of injury patients who meet the criteria of the trauma patient registration system.
9- Conducting follow-up courses on dealing with patients with accident injuries that are held for health care providers at the National Center for Ambulance and Emergency, leading to training all staff to deal with injuries.
10- Communicating with various national institutions in cases of multiple casualties and disasters, which include Civil Defense, the National Center for Crisis Management and Public Security.
11- Supervising the conduct of various workshops for health care providers in different departments.
12. Supervising the conduct of periodic exercises to determine emergency readiness to deal with injuries .
Program Development Stages:
1) In 2020, Developing a computerized data recording system for all injury and death patients resulting from accidents in Al Hussein Medical City. It is the first system of its kind in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and is considered a national information bank for injury patients.
2) In 2021, the establishment of a specialized sub-discipline within general surgery dedicated to accident injuries, considered the first of its kind in the kingdom, comprising 5 surgeons.
3) In 2022, the establishment of committees emanating from the unit and cooperation with civil defense and field medicine. Completion of supplying and equipping the operating room in the emergency room of Al-Hussein Medical City.
4) In 2023, activating specialized courses in dealing with accident injury patients for health care providers.
